2 Guidelines Must be 12 weeks of full-time work or the equivalent
In exceptional circumstances two sites might be accepted (must be arranged before you begin the internship) Positions must be administrative in nature – no performance, technical positions Should be paid: this can include grants that you or the organization may apply for (if otherwise, permission must be obtained from program director) Must be approved by the ARTM director in advance 11/18/2018

3 Reporting Submit intent to pursue an ARTM internship form to program coordinator including site (if already secured) or sector/type of position you are pursuing Submit Internship Approval Form to program director for approval prior to committing to/accepting an internship Contact the program director after you have completed four weeks of your internship Your employer may also be contacted to check on your internship progress from her/his point of view If you have problems, contact either the program director or coordinator asap 11/18/2018

6 At the end you MUST get a signed statement from your employer
write a report and submit it to the ARTM program director at least one month before the deadline for signaling your intention to graduate Submit the additional application to graduate with Diploma form to either the ARTM department or student services 11/18/2018

10 Awards Application Information/Tips
You will require references, the application process is the same as any other scholarship or bursary Apply via Anne Caulfield in student financial services The George Gardiner, Stuart McAllistar and a portion of the Imasco Awards do not have an Ontario residency restriction (Anne can explain in more detail) Awards may be conditionally granted prior to finalization of internship, but release of funds will not happen until proof of employment is received (i.e. letter confirming your internship from the employer) 11/18/2018

11 Tips Narrow down the activities/type of position you would like to pursue in a certain industry Research the companies you might be interested in working for in that field Discuss options with Joyce or Kathleen Talk to people – ask for information session/ contacts Find out as much as possible about the firm i.e. do they have an internship program, have they hired interns from Schulich before? Note deadlines for support programs available to both the intern and the internship site Offer to assist potential site with development of the internship and with the application for funding what you learned, what you hoped to get out of it, if expectations were met, if you think it will help you in the future, how the experience could have been improved 11/18/2018

12 Tips Contact the right person – send a letter indicating your interest, your skills, why you chose that firm and what you can contribute Attach your resume/cv Follow up with a phone call, ask for a meeting Start looking for a company early Ensure you have clear expectations for the work situation If possible have specific tasks/project that you will undertake 11/18/2018

13 Approaching an organization about a self-designed internship
Ensure you have clear expectations Contact the company you are interested in with a proposal for them to consider Outline the internship position you want – make sure you include with both program requirements and your learning objectives (include specific tasks) Don’t forget to highlight your skill set and how it can benefit the organization Although many companies do not have a formal internship program, they may be receptive to a student who has a specific idea of how they can contribute. Even if they have never considered hiring an intern, companies are always looking for self-motivated people who are familiar with their industry. 11/18/2018

15 Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations
About YCW Young Canada Works, an initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage was created in 1996 to help young Canadians develop work skills and on-the-job experience. YCW is part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES), which is committed to helping young people – students and graduates – particularly those facing barriers to employment, get the information and gain the skills, experience and ability they need to enter Canada's workforce.   Student work terms last between 6 and 16 consecutive weeks with a regular work schedule of 30 to 40 hours per week. Salaries are competitive for the region of employment. This program is only available to organizations that have fewer than 51 full-time employees. Note that the employers must apply to be part of this program. To be eligible students must: • Be between 15 and 30 years of age. • Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full- time basis in the next academic year. • Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. • Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
