Winter Storms

Cold Storms Winter storms derive their energy from a clash of two air masses of different temperatures and moisture levels. Snowflakes are made out of ice crystals. A blizzard is long-lasting snowstorm.

Bright Snow Bright snow blinds us with its gleaming white color because it reflects beams of light. Ice storms form when a layer of warm air is between two layers of cold air. Cold air moves over warm water and is warmed from below.

Moist Air Warm moist air rises downwind of lakes and forms heavy snow.
Each snowflakes is six-sided and is made up of as many as 200 ice crystals. The U.S. National Weather service defines an ice storm as a storm which results in the accumulation of at least one inch of ice on exposed surfaces.

Chilly Temperature The wind chill is the temperature your body feels when the air temperate combined with the wind speed. Frostbite is damage to the skin due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, usually below 32 Fahrenheit. Sleet is just rain drops that freeze into ice pellets before reaching the ground.
