1
Lipids ( Fats)
2
Elements Present Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen ( fewer)
**Sometimes Phosphorous (P) ***NOT a 1:2:1 ratio***
3
Examples of Lipids Fats Phospholipids Waxes Steroids
4
FATS Structure- glycerol + 3 fatty acids= triglyceride
Function- stores energy for long term use, Insulation
5
Saturated Fat The carbons in the hydrocarbon chain are all connected by SINGLE bonds the chain is straight
6
Characteristics of Saturated Fats
1) Fat molecules are tightly packed 2) Fat is solid at room temp Ex: lard, butter 3) Promotes build up of deposits on walls of blood vessels
7
Unsaturated Fat- the good fat
At least ONE pair of carbons in the hydrocarbon chain is connected by a DOUBLE bond
8
Phospholipids Structure- has a hydrophilic head ( likes water)
has a hydrophobic tail ( dislikes water) has phosphorous Function- found in cell membranes, controls what crosses into a cell
9
Phospholipid Structure
10
Steroids Structure- 4 fused carbon rings with different functional groups attached
11
Function of Steroids Chemical signal in the body Ex:
Cholesterol and hormones like estrogen and testosterone ***** Found in membranes of cells ***HIGH levels are bad
12
Waxes Structure: fatty acids and certain alcohols, solid at room temp.
Function: waterproofing
