5 What is an economic depression?
An economic depression occurs when a countries’ economy continues to decline for more than 2 years: GDP/GDP per capita decreases Prices decreases Amount of businesses decreases Unemployment increases

6 The role of the U.S in the global depression
During the war, Britain and France took out loans from the U.S to help pay for the war Following the war: Germany and Austria took out loans from the U.S to pay war reparations to France and Great Britain France and Great Britain used the money to pay back the U.S Summary: The U.S was receiving the same money they lent out = no profit

7 The failure of agriculture
During the war, farmers outside of western Europe (U.S, Canada, and Australia) increased production to support the war When the war ended: western Europe resumed their agricultural production Effects: created a surplus (too much) food decrease in the price of food  Less money for farmers More farmers out of work

8 Domino Effects of Global Depression
With less money  Fewer people bought manufactured goods  Businesses began to lose money Unemployment increased  Banks had fewer customers Economies began to crash

9 The U.S, British, and French Response
By the late 1920’s and early 1930’s mass protests against the government broke out: Over 30% were unemployed and few companies were hiring In France, the U.S and Great Britain, the government passed laws to lower taxes and created new government programs to help those in poverty:

In other countries in Western Europe (Spain, Italy, and Germany) , many people lost faith in democracy, overthrew their governments and turned to a new form of government ; FASCISM

Spain was ruled by highly corrupt constitutional monarchy, when the Great Depression hit in the 1920’s and 30’s many people rebelled against the government : Spain broke out into Civil War, a Fascist leader Francisco Franco soon took power with the support of Mussolini Fact: Killed over 500,000 innocent civilians

1932 – When unemployment reached 50%, protesters stormed the government building and killed the Prime Minister Fascist Military generals took power in the government and hoped to end unemployment by making Japan an industrial power and increasing nationalism

16 Rise of Fascist Japan They supplied these factories by conquering other territories across Asia and taking natural resources; calling their new colonization “Asia for the Asians” By 1938; Japan became a top 5 Industrial power and conquered China, Korea, Manchuria, and Taiwan
