1 Reviewing MATTER Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass – the amount of matter in something Volume – the amount of space something occupies Which of the following are made matter? A car? A box? You? Light?

2 Physical Property Physical property: a property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Examples: Magnetism Conductivity Electrical Thermal melting point boiling point density solubility

3 What is a mixture? A mixture is two or more substances that’s mixed together; but can be separated out two or more because their atoms aren’t combined.

4 What Is A Solution A solution is a special kind of mixture. Most solutions are made by a solid and a liquid. When a solid dissolves in a liquid, the liquid becomes the solvent and the solid becomes the solute.

5 What are some mixtures/solutions you use in everyday life?
Air is a solution Classify each as heterogeneous or homogeneous Homogeneous—A type of mixture in which the different parts are blended evenly so that the mixture is the same throughout. Homozygous—A type of cell or organism that has identical rather than different alleles for a particular trait. What different materials are in orange juice to make it a solution?

6 Grouping materials Scientists use a variety of properties to group materials. Using the physical properties to the right, group or arrange the materials. Magnetism Solubility Conductivity Density

7 Observing Mixtures and Solutions
In this investigation, you will… Make and identify mixtures and solutions. Separate mixtures and solutions using physical properties.

8 Materials Gravel (cup G) Sand (cup S) Salt – NaCl (cup NaCl)
Iron (cup Fe) Wood pieces (cup W) Water (in the beaker)

9 Observations of materials
Each group will get a cup of each material and observe/discuss the properties of each. Please remember that you are never to taste any of the materials Record our observations

10 Explain what you think might happen if you add all the materials in the cups to the beaker of water.

11 Mixtures can always be seperated
Our goal is to separate the mixture so that the original 5 solids can be placed back into the original cups. You job is to separate the materials, describe the process used in the separation, and explain how use of a physical property ensures that you separated the right substance.
