Fire Safety Training FIRE SAFETY ICR Discoveries 290 Munro Street Thunder Bay Over the past few months, there has been a lot of information about transparency and disclosure. The following presentation, along with a Canadian intranet site has been developed to simplify the process. The success of this initiative will lie in the hands of all Aon employees, worldwide. Since launched in early May on the Global Knowledge Exchange, the transparency site’s content and organization has continually improved. There is more information at the end of this presentation regarding where to look to find the documentation that you need. As the transparency documentation is constantly evolving, it is incumbent upon you to keep checking the “Guide to Greater Transparency at Aon Reed Stenhouse” site for the latest in compliance information and documentation. 4 FSP: Sequence of Operation
Activation of a manual or automatic alarm-initiating device building will cause the following to occur: Audible devices in entire building will sound in the alarm (evacuation) mode. The monitoring agency is automatically contacted of an alarm condition. Corresponding zone LED (red) at the fire alarm control panel and remote annunciator panel will illuminate. Fire Alarm will stay in the off normal condition until alarm-initiating device has returned to its normal state and system has been manually reset. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

5 FSP: Responsibilities Of The Owner
Implement and distribute this fire safety plan Appoint and organize supervisory staff to carry out fire safety duties Training of all tenants for responsibilities for fire safety and the emergency evacuation procedures Hold a fire drill every 12 months Ensure tenants practice control of fire hazards Review fire safety plan as required and at least annually, keep it current and notify the Chief Fire Official for changes in the fire safety plan Post and maintain emergency procedures for occupants in all common areas, and ensure tenants do the same ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

6 FSP: Responsibilities Of The Owner
Implement the checks, inspections, tests and maintenance of fire protection systems Maintain the buildings safety systems such as fire alarm, sprinklers, emergency power, emergency lights, and exit signs in good working condition Maintain records of test, check, or inspection of any maintenance work conducted on fire safety systems Implement alternate measures during shutdown of any fire and life safety systems Have a working knowledge of the fire alarm system If fire protection system is disabled arrange for a Fire watch Obtain and comply with the Ontario Fire Code Designate and train an assistant to carry out duties when absent ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

7 FSP: Responsibilities Of All Tenants
Be trained in and know the emergency evacuation procedures. Participate in fire drills. Practice measures to control fire hazards in the building. Post and maintain emergency procedures for occupants and staff within suites. Report any concerns or immediate threats to life safety to supervisor, maintenance manager or building owner. 8 FSP: Emergency Procedures
Upon discovery of fire: Alarm the occupants of the building. Yell "FIRE". Activate the alarm system, use the pull station. Leave the building by the nearest exit and close doors behind you. Telephone the Fire Department from a safe location, dial Never assume that this has been done. Give the correct address (290 Munro Street) and location of the fire and your name. Do not return until it is declared SAFE to do so by a Fire Official. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

9 FSP: Emergency Procedures
Immediately upon hearing the fire alarm: Leave the building by the nearest exit and close doors behind you. Proceed to a safe distance away from the building as directed by staff. Do not re-enter the building until it is declared SAFE to do so by a Fire Official. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

10 Emergency Procedures For All Tenants
This plan needs to be reviewed with all new hires during orientation and reviewed with all current employees to ensure proper execution of the evacuation during the building meetings Upon discovery of fire, tenants will Activate the closest fire alarm pull station. When proceeding to a pull station alert nearby occupants and staff to immediately exit the building Telephone the Fire Department from a safe location, dial Never assume that this has been done. 11 Emergency Procedures For All Tenants
Provide aid to occupants requiring assistance to exit the building. Leave the building by the nearest exit and close doors behind you. Proceed to the designated safe meeting place away from the building. Inform fire fighters of any persons who are suspected trapped in the building or require assistance to exit. Do not re-enter the building until advised to do so by the fire department. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

12 FSP: When Leaving The Building
Feel all doors before opening. If a door is hot do not open it, use an alternate exit. Close all doors behind you as you exit. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

13 FSP: When Leaving The Building
If you are caught in smoke, stay near the ground, crawl and take short breaths through your nose. Crawl along the floor where the air is cooler. If forced to dash through the smoke or flames, hold your breath. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

If your clothes catch on fire… Stop, drop, cover your face with your hands and roll on the ground to smother the flames. Do not run. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

Assemble at a safe meeting place outside the building away from the building. Do not re-enter the building until advised to do so by the fire department. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

16 FSP: Designated Safe Meeting Place
All personnel and occupants should be directed to a safe area near the Parking Lot by the Amethyst House. During inclement weather the meeting place is to be the Amethyst House at 289 Munro Street. Each tenant will account for all employees by verifying employees against the daily schedule. Any discrepancies must immediately be reported to responding Chief Fire Official. 20 Conduct regular fire drills
Employers Must Post building evacuation plans and discuss them during new-employee orientations Conduct regular fire drills Include physically-challenged employees in the fire emergency planning process Train designated employees in the use of portable fire extinguishers and designate employees who will help evacuate fire scenes ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

21 Training Objectives Train employees in the various sounds made by the alarm system and what action they need to take when an alarm sounds Routinely inspect and test fire extinguishers and check that all exit and direction signs provide correct information, are in place and are well-lit even during a power outage ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

22 Employee Fire Training
In the event of fire, response needs to be safe and speedy Employees should be trained to do the following: Count the number of doors, machines or desks between their work areas and the nearest exit. During a fire, they might need to find their way out in the dark. Learn the location of alternative exits from all work areas. ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay

Know the location of the nearest fire alarm and learn how to use it Post emergency phone numbers on or near all phones Be sure that someone in authority knows about any disability that could delay an escape and makes plans for a safe evacuation ICR Discoveries - Thunder Bay
