1 Back to the Basics The Periodic Table

2 Why is it helpful? Metal vs non-metal Groups Charges Diatomic Elements
Molar Mass

3 Metals

4 Metals Will always be the first part of an ionic compound
If in ionic form, will have a positive charge Ionic form means that it has lost electrons, making it a charged particle

5 Non-metals

6 Non-Metals Will always be the second part of an ionic compound
If in ionic form, will have a negative charge Ionic form meaning it has gained electrons, making it a charged particle

7 Important Groups Group 1 – Alkali Metals

8 Important Groups Group 2 – Alkaline Earth Metals

9 Important Groups Transition Metals

10 Important Groups Group 3

11 Important Groups Group 7 - Halogens

12 Charges Charged particles are called ions
Cations = positively charged particles Metals Ammonium ion Anions = negatively charges particles Non-metals Rest of the polyatomic ions We figure out charges based on how far the element is from a filled valance shell (closest noble gas in either direction)

13 Charges *transition metals, and group 4 can have multiple charges*
Zn+2 Ag+1 +1 +2

14 Diatomic Elements There are 7 diatomic elements. We refer to them as Br I N Cl H O F. These

15 Molar Mass Molar mass is the mass of one mole of a substance. Units are either g/mol or amu. We use this number when converting between grams and moles
