Welcome to Elmea World Cup 2018
The live draw…

As well as being a football World Cup, at Elmlea it will ALSO be a geography World Cup

How does the football World Cup work?

What are we going to do? A class World Cup – Each class will be drawn 3 teams to cheer on and research throughout the World Cup. Your class will earn points if your countries do well in the football but also if you learn about your countries and make fact-files about them. The class with the most points at the end of the tournament will be crowned Elmlea World Cup Champions & earn some prizes. A house quiz testing your football & geography knowledge about ALL the countries taking part. Questions will include capital cities, key landmarks (e.g. Eiffel tower or big ben), flags, key rivers/mountains in that country etc. as well as questions about their national football team. The more you know, the better your house will do. The winning house will win the Quad & Adventure Playground on Fri 6th July.

Elmea World Cup 2018 Each class will draw 3 countries to cheer-on and research throughout the tournament. Your countries will earn your class points: 1 point for every goal your team scores 3 points for every game your team wins 1 point for every game your team draws (group stage only) 1 point bonus if your team loses in knockout rounds after extra time or on penalties but was drawing after 90mins. 1 point for every match your team doesn’t receive any yellow cards. 1 point bonus for scoring more than 3 goals in a game. 1 point bonus for conceding more than 3 goals in a game. You can earn bonus points for your class by producing fact-files about one of your countries. (If every member of your class does a fact-file for each of your countries that will earn your class 90 extra points!) Only good quality fact-files will earn points. Hand these to your teacher when complete. The best fact-file in each year group will win a special individual prize. Deadline for fact-files are Thursday 12th July – Winners announced on Monday 16th July

What should my fact-file look like?
Your fact-file should be on A4 paper. You can use a computer or pens and pencils (or, a bit of both) to create your fact-file. It’s up to you! A good factfile might include: Clear title (country) Colourful/ pictures Map of country Flag Location Capital city Key landmarks Key rivers/mountains Population Language(s) spoken Other interesting information Top football players Easy to find information

Elmlea World Cup draw To try and make the Elmlea World Cup as competitive and exciting as possible, each class will draw 1 team from each pot. Pot 1 – contains 12 countries expected to do well. Pot 2 – contains 12 teams that have a fair chance of doing well. Pot 3 – contains 12 teams that have a slim chance of doing well. As there are only 32 teams in the World Cup and our Elmlea version requires 36 teams, I have duplicated 4 teams in pot 3 (Japan, Saudi Arabia, Serbia & Morocco)

What do I do now? Learn as much as you can about all the nations involved ready for our house quiz in a few weeks time. Go home and learn about your own 3 teams/countries. Start creating your fact-files and hand them to your teacher as soon as they are complete (Final Deadline – Tues 12th July). Cheer on your teams during the World Cup and record your points after each match on your points chart and World Cup wall chart which will be on display in each classroom.
