The NPMA is over 40 years old and we have members that have been involved for other 30 years, and members who are very new. Does NPMA have something for everyone, does NPMA have something for me? ABSOLUTELY! Marcia D. Whitson, CPPM, CF VP of Professional Development

2 Our Association Founded in 1970 by Federal Government Contractors
3 Regions with 63 chapters and 3,700 members 2 Chapters are located overseas 1 Student Chapter with others currently being organized NPMA was founded by a group of federal government contractors who wanted to have a professional support network. The association has been serving the interests of property and asset management professionals since 1970.

3 Our New Vision Statement
Enable organizations to realize maximum value from their assets The board voted to re-write our Vision Statement which emphasizes our importance to our customers. Our true customers are our members and the organizations who support and employ our valuable members.

4 Our New Mission Statement
Advance the profession of Asset Management through leadership in education, standards, compliance and certifications Our new mission statement encompasses the very nature of becoming involved. It is through these opportunities that our members can reach their true professional potential.

5 Guiding Principles NPMA has several guiding principles with which we conduct our business. These emphasize our continued efforts to support you, the member: Empower our members and their organizations to succeed Provide tools, resources, leadership opportunities to enhance and support professional performance, career and personal achievements Provide learning resources, best practices, standards, and metrics for tomorrow’s Asset Management professionals. There are a total of 8 principles by which the Association develops their Strategic Plans. These 3 show our commitment to the individual member to progress and to succeed.

6 How Can YOU Get Involved?
What are the opportunities for you as an individual? When are the occasions to work with peers and colleagues? How can you share your expertise, knowledge and experience? Where , How and When can I get involved? WHY WOULD I WANT TO GET INVOLVED? Your should be asking yourself what is in it for me! After researching the answer to this question, I know you will find an Association that has exactly what you need to increase your knowledge, networking opportunities, leadership growth, and professional development. An Association that will give you back more than you give.

7 Opportunities for You Education How can you be involved in education?
Classroom Offerings –28 different classes are taught by NPMA Instructors On-Line Training – 14 on-line Property Management classes are now available. 21 more PM classes are being prepared and 53 professional development classes Webinars – 8 currently on-line with 15 being prepared now On-Site – Any class can be brought to your company or to your chapter How can you be involved in education? Let’s look at the opportunities that NPMA has for you to be involved as an Individual, and the person benefits of those opportunities. What are the educational opportunities offered through the NPMA and how can you become involved? As a Chapter you should consider bring an on-site class to your area, it is a great way to generate revenues for your Chapter and give your members educational opportunities

Education NES – Offers over 100 workshops, general sessions, pre-conference classes, vendors Education Series – 2 series events are scheduled each year with workshops, general sessions, panel discussions and vendors Chapter Meetings – Chapter meetings provide an excellent opportunity to share knowledge and experience Certification preparation – Conduct study sessions for your Chapter to help members Certify How can you be involved in education? NES and our educational series offer many opportunities for you to become involved. You can plan and teach a workshop, participate in a discussion panels, offer to assist in the many tasks involved in hosting. Since not everyone is comfortable teaching there are many things that can be done behind the scene. Writing, planning, calling, or just stepping up to offer help.

9 Opportunities for You Education How can you be involved in education?
NPMA has a partnership with Stevens Henager College (Nationally accredited) and Independence University (Regionally accredited). Offering these opportunities to further your education in the area of Property Management: Associates Degree Bachelor’s Degree Certificate Program (for Certification Preparation) All on-line, accelerated courses How can you be involved in education? Is obtaining a degree a lifetime goal for you? You now have the opportunity to obtain a degree in the area of Property Management through Stevens Henager and Independence University. If you company requires “regionally” or “nationally” accredited schools for reimbursement, then we do have a choice to meet this requirement.

Education How can you be involved in education? Be an advocate at your workplace for training, seek support from your managers Become an Instructor for the NPMA Write training materials for NPMA Conduct a webinar or workshop for NPMA Help format on-line classes Find out how to bring a class to your Chapter or workplace We are seeking experienced and knowledgeable Property Professionals to be involved in the our education, writing and research efforts of our Association.

11 Opportunities for You Certification
Obtain Certification –If you are not certified, DO IT! Certification Training – NPMA offers several classes throughout the year and prior to each Educational Series event. Self-Study – Using the certification materials and study guides, an individual can self-study and test with a proctor. On-Line Training – Take a specific on-line class to help you study for the Certification exam. How can you be involved in certification? Certification is one of the most visible ways you can show your Agency or Company your professional achievements in the area of Property Management. Our certification program offers 3 levels of Certification: the CPPS – Certified Professional Property Specialist, the CPPA – Certified Professional Property Administrator, and the CPPM – Certified Professional Property Manager. Certification If you are certified, how can you be involved in certification? Re-write Materials - Our certification materials are reviewed and rewritten on a biennial basis Proctor Exams – As a Proctor you can assist with a Chapter, co-workers or at pre-conference exams Grader – The CPPM exams are graded by grading teams - train and become qualified as a grader Advocate - Become an advocate for the Certification Program, promote it to peers and fellow Chapter members. Promote NPMA certification to your company and other organizations. If you are already Certified, you can still be involved in the Certification program through these opporunities.

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) – Network with people who are doing exactly what you do in your Property Management responsibilities. Find answers to your questions through the SIG forums Literature – There are over 10 years of Property Professional articles archived on the Website, 2 issues of the Journal of Property & Asset Mgmt, conference presentations and papers, and other member submitted resources ASTM Standards – Over 25 consensus standards for the property industry What resources are available for my use? SIGs are one of the most exciting ways to network with professionals who do exactly what you do on a day-to-day basis. A SIG provides a way for you to get answers to your every day issues from people who have the experience and knowledge in a specific area. Sign up on the SIG forums to ask questions and see questions in your area.

Jobs – A very active job bank is on the website with property management jobs throughout the world NPMA Certification Manuals – The certification manuals should become a reference document in your office, and they come with an electronic version Hot Links – Our website provides links to important regulations and other important resources My Profile – NPMA maintains a complete history of your NPMA involvement Financial Support – The NPMA foundation can provide financial assistant for education What resources are available for my use? This is just a few of the resources available through the NPMA. Explore yourself to learn where the information is and how you can find answers and opportunities.

Resources Available How can you contribute to NPMA Resources? Utilize – Use the resources available in your work and professional growth, share these resources with others. Standards Development – Join ASTM and be a part of future Standards development for our profession. SIGs– Being connected with one or several SIGs helps you network, get answers to job specific questions, share your knowledge with others in your job field, and learn about upcoming training specific to your needs. Literature – Write articles for the Property Professional, presentations for your Chapter, or for educational seminars. NPMA is very actively involved in developing Standards for our profession. By being the leaders in Standards development, we can influence the industry and provide expert knowledge and guidance to property professionals around the world.

16 Seek Leadership Positions
Opportunities for You Seek Leadership Positions Chapter-level – Chapter officers (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and National Delegate, etc) are positions which are normally elected offices. In addition, most chapters have several committees that may require a Chairperson. Become the Webmaster for your Chapter. Regional-level – Regional officers (Regional Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary) are elected offices. In addition, Regions have several Director positions which are appointed by the Regional VP. National-level – There are 11 National officers which are elected positions (see listing on the website). In addition, there are several National Director positions appointed. What leadership positions are available for me? What leadership positions could I hold? Are you involved as a leader? Why not! If you think you lack leadership skills, this is a way to learn them. If you are to unsure about being a leader, then start slowly and develop that assurance to move forward. Being a leader is one of the most rewarding ways to be involved by enlisting the aid and support of others to accomplish a common goal or task.

Try new things, form new working groups, ask members what needs they have and work to meet those needs.

Leadership Positions How can I obtain a leadership position? Volunteer – All of the leadership positions are on a voluntary basis. Volunteering is about giving, contributing, and helping other individuals and our profession. What is to be gained? You will gain experience, acquire new skills, meet and work with new people, and expand a network of other property professionals that will continue to help you. Seek – Seek for ways to become involved. Share your talents, skills and knowledge with others. Be involved and offer your ideas, experience and visions. Learn About the Association – Learn about the organizational structure of our Association, the by-laws and our operations or strategic plan for the future. What leadership positions could I hold? What is an opportunity? A favorable or advantageous circumstance or combination of circumstances (from the free dictionary.com) Don’t wait on circumstances to control you, control your circumstances!

19 What are the Your Obstacles
Make your obstacles into opportunities? Time - If time is an issue for you: NPMA will help you learn faster and more efficient ways to get your job done. Networking with other professionals helps you to find answers quickly. Resources are available to you 24/7. Finances – If you are unable to get financial support from your agency or company, look to the NPMA Foundation, your Chapter, or your Region. Look at the payback for being involved. Isn’t it worth the investment? Support – If you do not receive support from your Supervision, then sell them on NPMA! Let us help you show them the benefit of being involved. Of course there are obstacles to everything in life, but we will achieve what is important to us. Determine what is important in your professional career. Then set goals and find ways and people to help you achieve those goals.

20 What’s In It For Me? Networking - Is a tremendous benefit of the NPMA and will help you to find other professionals who can help you. Learn or sharpen skills – Opportunities to learn in the field of your work, to find answers you need, to better your skills for career growth. Gain Visibility – Become that expert whom others seek for answers. Become the property professional at your workplace who knows the answers. Hone Leadership Skills - Practice and develop your leadership skills and become a great leader. NPMA was formed as a non-profit organization dedicated to helping it members. NPMA Website – – Has links and resources for everything previously mentioned. Newsflash – An electronic newsletters which provides timely up-to-date information. SIG Forums – Available on the website for you to submit any type of question on any subject to other NPMA professionals. Chapter, Regional and National Leaders – The leaders of the NPMA are always willing to answer questions or to help you in anyway. Are you just coasting along, if so you have to be going downhill. Don’t look back and wish you had done things different in your life. Don’t look forward and think it is too hard to get there. No goals is too hard, and no path too long when it is shared with others. If you are not involved and are just coasting along, then you are going downhill! Involvement provides recognition, a sense of belonging and an opportunity to help others
