Arabs spread Islam through preaching, conquest & trade While Muslims split into two groups, the Arab Empire reached new heights. Turks & Moguls built Muslim empires in Asia, Africa & Europe

Meeting People Umayyad- Dynasty that ruled at Damascus (capital)
Sufi- group of people who prayed & taught Islam. Abbasid- dynasty that came after Umayyads Suleiman-Ottoman sultan; ruled in 1500’s Mogul- Muslim warriors who came from mountains N. of India through Khyber Pass. Akbar- greatest Mogul ruler; brought peace & stability to India

Indonesia:Island republic in S. Asia consisting of most of Malay Archipelago. Timbuktu:Trading city of Muslim learning in W. Africa. Baghdad: Capital city of Iraq and the Abbasid Empire Delhi: City in N. India.

caliph- important Muslim political & religious leader. Shiite- Muslim group that accepts only descendants of Muhammad’s son-in-law Ali as rightful rulers of Muslim. Sunni- Muslim group that accepts descendants of Umayyad’s as rightful rulers of Muslims. sultan- military & political leader with absolute authority over Muslim country. policy- General rules & procedures of Gov’mt devote-focus one’s time & energy on a particular subject. style- particular way something is done or created. impose- force someone to accept or do something.

How Did Islam Split Shiites: Believed only future caliphs should only be decedents of Ali (Muhammad’s son-in-law) Sunnis: Accepted Umayyad dynasty as rightful caliphs Over time Shiites and Sunnis developed different types of religious practices and customs
