The Book of Acts Our Goal What the early church was able to accomplish is a perpetual testimony of what God can do through those who humble their hearts in prayer, live beyond individual differences, and let themselves be used by the Spirit for God’s honor and glory. What can we who are called of God to finish it learn from their story? Ang Ating Mithiin. The Second Missionary Journey Initial Words Paul and Barnabas’s separation was turned into a blessing. In dividing their efforts they could cover a wider area. Barnabas took Mark and returned to Cyprus (Acts 4:36). Having invited Silas, Paul went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches there. 1. Lystra and Philippi (Acts 16) “Timothy, the son of a...Jewish wo-man...but his father was Greek. ... Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him.... And the keeper of the prison... drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called...saying, ‘Do yourself no harm....’ And he...said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ ” 1. Listre at Filipos. “Timoteo, na anak ng isang babaing Judio...Griyego ang kanyang ama. ... Lystra and Philippi Timothy Circumcised Though Timothy’s father was a Gentile, his mother was a Jewish Christian; her name was Eunice. Despite being uncircumcised, Timothy knew the Scriptures from childhood (2 Tim. 3:15), implying he was also a pious person. As a Christian, he already had earned the respect and the admiration of all the local believers. Tinuli si Timoteo. Lystra and Philippi Timothy Circumcised Because Jewish identity was passed on through the mother’s line rather than the father’s, Timothy was a Jew. He had not been circumcised on the eighth day after birth, perhaps because his father, a Greek, viewed circumcision as barbaric. Lystra and Philippi Timothy Circumcised Wishing to have Timothy as a co-worker and knowing that, as an uncircumcised Jew, he would be forbidden to enter the Jewish synagogues under the charge of apostasy, Paul had him circumcised. Paul’s motivation for doing so, therefore, was entirely practical and should not be seen as a contradiction to the gospel he preached. Lystra and Philippi Sabbath in a Riverside That in Philippi he and his group went to a riverside to pray—together with some women, both Jewish and Gentile worshipers of God—probably means there was no synagogue in the city. The significance of this is that Paul did not go to Jewish synagogues on Sabbaths only for evangelistic purposes, but also because this was his day of worship. Sabbath sa Tabing-ilog. Lystra and Philippi A Jailer’s Conversion Paul and Silas’s answer to the jailer’s question is in full harmony with the gospel, since salvation is entirely through faith in Jesus (Gal. 2:16). What we cannot conclude from the episode, however, is that belief in Jesus is all that is necessary for baptism, at the expense of the proper doctrinal and practical instruction. 2. Thessalonica, Berea, Athens (Acts 17) Then Paul...said, ‘Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for...I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you....’ Some... believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris....’ “Kaya’t tumindig si Pablo...at sinabi, “Mga lalaking taga-Atenas, napapansin ko na sa lahat ng bagay kayo’’y lubhang relihiyoso. 2. Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens Thessalonian Jews React Many devout Greeks and not a few prominent women were persuaded by Paul’s message. That these converts “joined Paul and Silas” (Acts 17:4, NKJV) seems to mean they formed a separate group and met apart from the synagogue, probably in Jason’s house. Moved with jealousy, their opponents started a riot. Tumugon ang mga Judio sa Tesalonica. Thessalonian Jews React Their intention was to bring Paul and Silas—Timothy is not mentioned—before the city’s assembly and accuse them. As they could not find the missionaries, Jason himself and a few other new believers were dragged to the local authorities under the charge of sheltering political agitators. Berean Jews React The Jews from Berea are praised not because they agreed with Paul and Silas but because of their willingness to examine the Scriptures for themselves and on a daily basis to see if what the missionaries were saying was correct. An emotional response to the gospel, without the intellectual conviction, tends to be superficial and short-lived. Tumugon ang mga Judio sa Berea. Athenians React Some philosophers took interest in Paul’s teaching and invited him to address the Areopagus, the high council of the city. In his speech, Paul did not quote from the Scriptures or recap the history of God’s dealings with Israel. Instead, he presented some important biblical truths in a way that cultured pagans could understand. Tumugon ang mga Taga-Atenas. Athenians React This belief collided head on with two Greek concepts: (1) that God have no dealings with human affairs, and (2) that when a person dies there can be no resurrection at all. This helps to explain why the gospel was foolishness to the Greeks (1 Cor. 1:23), and the number of converts in Athens was small. 3. Corinth Acts 18:1-4 NKJV “And He found a...Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla.... So, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; for by occupation they were tentmakers. And he reasoned in the synagogue.... and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.” 3. Corinto. “Natagpuan niya roon ang isang Judio na ang pangalan ay Aquila, isang lalaking tubong Ponto, na kararating pa lamang mula sa Italia, kasama si Priscila na kanyang asawa.... At dahil ang hanapbuhay niya’y tulad din ng kanila, tumuloy siya sa kanila, at sila'y magkakasamang nagtrabaho—parehong paggawa ng tolda ang hanapbuhay nila. ¶ At siya’y nakikipagtalo...sa sinagoga at sinisikap na mahikayat ang mga Judio at mga Griyego” (Gawa 18:1-4).

3. Corinth Aquila and Priscilla In Corinth Paul would stay for one and a half years. Aquila and Priscilla would become Paul’s lifelong friends. They were already Christians when they came to Corinth, probably because of the deportation of Jews from Rome by the Emperor Claudius. Paul and his new friends also shared the same trade. Sina Aquila at Priscila. Sa Corinto si Pablo ay mananatili nang isa at kalahating taon. Corinth Aquila and Priscilla When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, they brought some finan-cial support from the churches there (2 Cor. 11:8, 9), which allowed Paul to devote himself entirely to preaching. Paul’s policy was to live at his own expense, though he also taught that “those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:14). 3. Corinth Encouraged to Stay Some Jews did believe, as well as some Gentile worshipers of God. Among the converts were Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his household. Many Corinthians also believed and were baptized. The situation among the Jews, however, was rather tense, but in a night vision Paul received divine encouragement to stay on. Final Words: The Acts of the Apostles 232. “All will be judged according to the light that has been given. The Lord sends forth His ambassadors with a message of salvation, and those who hear He will hold responsible for the way...they treat the words of His servants. Those who are sincerely seeking for truth will make a careful investigation, in the light of God’s word, of the doctrines presented to them.” Huling Pananalita. “Lahat ay hahatulan ayon sa liwanag na naibigay. Pinahahayo ng Panginoon ang Kanyang mga embahador na may mensahe ng kaligtasan, at yung makakarinig ay pananagutin Niya sa paraang kanilang tataratuhin ang mga salita ng Kanyang mga lingkod.
