POETRY 101 (Take notes) Poetry must have a purpose! You cannot simply vomit emotions or words onto a page! Common purposes for poetry: To evoke an image using the 5 senses To recreate a feeling To tell a story (narrative) To create an extraordinary perception of the ordinary To flashback to an important memory
3
Coherence and Unity Poems should never have forced rhyme! They should, however, have order and unity. The purpose should guide your poem. For example, if you are creating an image, begin by describing the image from top to bottom, left to right, or upon entering a place and then traveling through it. If you are evoking a feeling, begin with the overall description of how that feeling has taken you over and how it progresses; or the opposite, start with a feeling and how it leaves you or changes from a negative to a positive.
4
Coherence and Unity If your purpose is to tell a story, begin with some chronological order or jump into the action at a particular place and continue in order of events from there. In order to use a flashback, you must be skilled and the audience must be aware that you are recalling a memory.
5
Coherence and Unity If you are creating an extraordinary perception of something ordinary, such as the power within your pencil, you must begin by describing the original thing and transfer new life into it! If you are thinking back to an important memory, begin by using very descriptive terms to identify the place, people, atmosphere, mood , tone, and overall importance it has in your life.
