During a voyage funded by Spain he became the First European to explore the mouth of the Amazon River His name was given to North and South America because many consider him the first to recognize that the Americas were not part of Asia. Died of Malaria in 1512

11 Ferdinand Magellan 1480-1521 Portuguese Explorer
Voyage funded by Spain In 1519, Magellan led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe Out of a crew more than 200, only 18 survived the trip. Magellan was killed in 1521 during a battle in the Philippines. On September 6, 1522, almost three years from the day it began its historic journey, the Victoria and 18 crew members, arrived in Spain. It was the first vessel to circumnavigate the globe.
