Conflicts with England and France took up most of Spain’s time and money. 29

Spain placed HEAVY TAXES on the settlers in Texas. Spain forced the settlers in Texas to donate money to pay for European wars. 30

Why It Matters By 1800, the settlers were feeling dissatisfied.
Colonists were unhappy with the Spanish rulers. Colonists wanted to make their own rules.

Moses Austin’s Plan Austin set out to Texas in 1820 to meet with Governor Antonio Martinez, hoping to secure a contract from Spanish authorities that would allow him to bring 300 families to Texas. Austin was first turned down. With the help of in San Antonio, Moses Austin was given permission by the Spanish government to start a colony in Texas. Austin returned to the east to begin recruiting colonists.

During one trip outside of Texas, Moses became ill. While on his deathbed, he learned from Erasmo Seguín his plan to colonize Texas had been approved. Moses asked that his son, Stephen, carry out his dream of bringing settlers to Texas.

Stephen F. Austin Stephen F. Austin dropped his plans for a legal career and went to Texas to fulfill his father’s wishes. He visited San Antonio de Bexar and met with the governor, who had assigned to help Austin.

In August 1821, Governor Martinez legally transferred Moses Austin’s grant to Stephen.
As an Empresario, Stephen Austin had the job of getting people over to Texas. The first three hundred families Stephen Austin settled were known as THE OLD THREE HUNDRED.
