4 Israel - The Holy Land, but whose Holy Land?
Israel is known as the Holy Land for Jews, Muslims, Bahais and Christians and it is a place of great religious significance for all four Abrahamic religions. For many centuries different religious groups have fought over the right to own the land as they all believe it to be their promised land. Muslims and Christians fought over it in the Crusades and the current Israeli-Palestinian Conflict originates over claims to the land from Jews and Muslims. To investigate why Christians may go to the Holy Land.

5 To investigate why Christians may go to the Holy Land.
For Christians, Israel (The Holy Land) is an important place of pilgrimage. It is the place where Jesus was born, lived, taught and died, so Christians may visit in order to learn more about how their religion began and to follow in the footsteps of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Whilst on pilgrimage, Christians are likely to visit several places, including Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Bethlehem = Jesus was born there. Galilee = Where Jesus did most of his preaching Jerusalem = Where Jesus spent his last week including the Garden of Gethsmane (where he was arrested) and the Via Dolorosa (the route he walked to his death) To investigate why Christians may go to the Holy Land.

What is it like? Read through the information about the Holy Land and complete the tasks below: Stick the map of the Holy Land into your book and around it label what happened at Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee and Jerusalem. Make sure you give a detailed description. When you have done this, write one detailed paragraph to say why Israel (The Holy Land) is an important place of pilgrimage for Christians. Main Written Task! You should now have a clear understanding of what happened at four main sites of pilgrimage for Christians in the Holy Land. Using this information, and your imagination and literacy skills, you are going to write a postcard as if you are at the Holy Land and are writing home to Mum/Dad/Girlfriend/Boyfriend/Next-door- neighbour Bob/the dog etc. Include: Where you have been - you must include details of at least two sites What you saw there and how it made you feel Whether anything happened - did you have a religious experience or did a miracle occur? How the whole experience has had an impact on you and your faith - e.g. have you become more religious, felt a special bond with Jesus or God, want to dedicate your life to teaching others about Jesus etc. Learning Outcomes: Level 3: I can describe the Christian pilgrimage and imagine I am there. Level 4: I can use keywords to show an understanding of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land and how it would feel to be there. Level 5: I can explain the importance of the pilgrimage for Christians and express my view of it. Level 6: I can explain the impact pilgrimage has on the lives of Christians and express insight into pilgrimage at the Holy Land. To investigate why Christians may go to the Holy Land.

Peer-assessment First, swap your postcard with someone else! Then, read their postcard and write a response. In the response, include things they have done well and things they have missed out e.g. ‘Hi, Mum here! I’m really pleased to hear you had a great time walking the Via Dolorosa to follow Jesus but I thought you were going to Bethlehem too - did you not do that in the end? Glad you’re doing well! Mum x’ Finally, underneath, write which level you think they have achieved and why.

9 Compare - Which would you go on?
Think back to last lesson where you learnt about the four main Buddhist sites of pilgrimage. Discuss the following questions in pairs and then write out your answers neatly in your book in full sentences: Out of the four Buddhist and four Christian places of pilgrimage, which would you like to go to most and why? Which religion’s followers, Christianity or Buddhism, do you think show the most dedication to their religion by going on pilgrimage and why? Is it more important for Buddhists or Christians to go on a pilgrimage? Why do you think this? To investigate why Christians may go to the Holy Land.

10 ‘Pilgrimage is pointless nowadays when you can see the places on TV.’
Do you agree? To investigate why Christians may go to the Holy Land.
