The aim of today’s lesson is to answer these questions:
Why was Henry unpopular at the end of his reign? How successful was Henry VII? Historians understand the past by asking questions.

Splendid gothic architecture of Henry VII Chapel built to house magnificent tomb by Pietro Torrigiano. Richard III = lasting Tudor propaganda, like the history of his reign he paid Polydore Vergil to write. Richmond Palace – rebuilt after fire destroyed Sheen (1497). Tudor rose = uniting of York and Lancaster Gold sovereign commissioned by Henry VII before 1492 invasion of France - coat of arms includes French fleur de lys - to pressure Charles VIII into a favourable settlement.

10 In pairs Read “Renewed instability” (Ferriby pp.32-3) and write down how the following 1) undermined Henry’s security 2) what he did to solve the problem Family deaths Edmund de la Pole Extension activity: Read the extract from Lockyer (see handout) and write down your answer to the question: was Henry right to be worried about the succession? Give reasons for your answer.

15 Harsh policies Using evidence from (Ferriby p.33), create a diagram showing the impact of Henry’s insecurity on his treatment of the nobility. Extension activity: Write a letter from Henry VII to his son Henry, justifying the harshness of his policies towards the end of his reign.
