1 Earthquakes and Society

2 Predicting vs Forecasting
Cannot predict the exact time and place of earthquakes However, can use data to make “forecasts”

3 Earthquake hazard: a measurement of how likely an area is to having damaging earthquakes in the future Determined by past and present activity

4 What is the relationship between earthquake magnitude and frequency?

5 What is the relationship between earthquake magnitude and frequency?
Large earthquakes happen less often

6 Gap Hypothesis: sections of active faults that have had relatively few earthquakes are likely to be the sites of strong earthquakes in the future. Areas where few earthquakes have occurred are called seismic gaps

7 Earthquakes and Buildings
Retrofitting: process of making older structures more earthquake-resistant Common ways to retrofit older homes Fasten the building to its foundation Use steel to strengthen brick

8 Other ways: Look in your book on page 237
Write down the names of 2 ways to retrofit BRIEFLY summarize that technique

9 Earthquake Preparation
Before earthquake: safeguard home, make a plan, get emergency kits together

10 Earthquake Preparation
During quake: Inside- crouch or lie face-down under a table or desk Outside- get away from trees, power lines, etc. Car- stop car, stay inside it.

11 Earthquake Preparation
After quake- Stay calm Remove self from danger
