1 Introduction to Traits & Inheritance
Anna Ward ~ Ridge Road MS

2 Science Starter 02/24 Grab a copy of the Vocabulary Matching Sheet and complete.

3 Science Starter!!! What is a Mutation?
Name a disease associated with a genetic mutation. What are the symptoms of this disorder? List some physical characteristics you have…hair color, skin color, eye color, height. What makes you different (physically) from other individuals? Where did you get these traits from?

4 Announcements: Science Fair Projects are due March 13
17 days to complete all parts If you need to retest for Reproduction Tutoring on Thursday morning, 8 am

5 Agenda for today Guided Notes: Gregor Mendel Article and Questions
What is a trait? Inherited vs. Acquired What determines inherited traits? How do we indicate traits? What is a phenotype? A genotype? What makes a trait dominant or recessive? Gregor Mendel Article and Questions Inherited Traits BINGO!

6 A treat for you…a favorite from 2011…BLAST FROM THE PAST!

7 What is a Trait? A trait is a characteristic that describes you
Traits can be inherited (from your genetics) or acquired (something you learned.) During genetics, we will be learning about inherited traits.

8 Which of the following are inherited?
The Shape of you nose? Your shoe size? Your height? Your favorite color? Your love of Takis? Your temper? The color of your eyes? Your motivation? Your ability to ride a bike? Your hair texture? Your skin color? The amount of stuff you know? The size of your head? Your allergies? The color of your hair? Your weight?

9 What determines inherited traits?
Inherited Traits are determined by your genetics…the information that was passed down in your DNA from your biological mother and your biological father. Heredity is the process of passing on genetic information from parents to offspring.

10 In Biology, how do we indicate inherited traits?
Alleles are variations of the same gene. In biology, we code the traits using letters. Remember on the pre-assessment when you saw different letters such as “R” and “B”? These letters represent alleles.

11 So what does it mean by genotype & phenotype?
The genotype is the actual genetic make-up of the organism….it is ALL the genes the organism has, even the ones that are not expressed. The phenotype are the observable characteristics of the organism…what you can see or what is expressed.

12 Dominant Vs. Recessive We can determine whether an allele is dominant or recessive. Here are some quick definitions: Dominant: A term that describes an allele that determines the phenotype of an individual organism when two different copies are present in the genotype. DOMINANT ALLELES ARE ALWAYS WRITTEN AS AN UPPERCASE LETTER.

13 Dominant Vs. Recessive We can determine whether an allele is dominant or recessive. Here are some quick definitions: Recessive: A term that describes an allele that is NOT expressed when combined with a dominant form of the gene. RECESSIVE ALLELES ARE ALWAYS WRITTEN AS A LOWER CASE LETTER.

14 Let’s Practice…Dominant or Recessive?
b? g? r? T? B? W? G? k? R? d?

15 Gregor Mendel He is the father of genetics. He worked with pea plants back in the 1800s. He was a very cool guy. Please READ the article I gave you and answer the follow up questions… Look for words you learned today!

16 Science Starter 02/25 (A blast from the past…)
What type of cloud produces a thunderstorm? A high pressure system is in the area. What does the sky outside of your window look like? What is the layer of the atmosphere that supports life on Earth? What is the most abundant gas in our atmosphere?

17 Have you had enough note copying?????
I apologize for all the notes…but I do appreciate all of your hard work and effort. I am now rewarding you with a fun activity! Traits BINGO: You will each get a card. The winner (I will verify your card) gets a treat from the back If you are using a neighbor, you need to write down his/her name in that block when you color it in!

18 Exit Ticket I need your exit ticket BEFORE YOU leave my classroom.
What is a trait? List 3 inherited traits and 3 acquired traits. How do we represent dominant traits? Recessive Traits?
