1 Associations between proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ) types and knee osteoarthritic changes in older adults  M. Lu, W. Han, K. Wang, Z. Zhu, B. Antony, F. Cicuttini, Z. Yin, G. Jones, C. 2 Fig. 1 Seven PTFJ type configurations. (a). Plane joint type on T1-weighted sagittal image which has plane articulation surface on both tibial and fibular sites. (b). Trochoid joint type on T1-weighted sagittal image which shows a convex surface on tibial site and a concave surface on fibular site. (c). Double trochoid joint type on T1-weighted sagittal image which shows one convex and the other concave facet on both tibial and fibular sites. The arrows show the convex facet on both tibial and fibular site. (d). Saddle joint type on T1-weighted coronal image which shows triangle-like facet on fibular site which is only articulated with flat tibial facet on one side. (e). Condylar joint type on T1-weighted coronal image which shows a condyle-like facet on fibular site and a nearly flat facet on tibia site. The arrow points to the condyle-like facet. (f). Trochlear joint type on T1-weighted sagittal image which shows double slightly concave surface on fibular site. The arrows point to the concave surface on fibular site. (g). Ball & socket joint type on T1-weighted coronal image which shows ball shaped fibular facet and a concave tibial facet. The arrow points to the curved joint facet. 3 Fig. 2 Prevalence of osteoarthritic changes among different PTFJ type configurations at lateral tibiofemoral compartment. (a). Participants with irregular joint type configurations (double trochoid, saddle, condylar, trochlear, ball & socket) have higher prevalence of cartilage defect compared with those who have plane and trochoid joint type configurations, except for that participants with double trochoid and trochlear joint type configurations have lower prevalence of cartilage defect compared with those who have trochoid type configuration. (b). Participants with irregular joint type configurations have higher prevalence of BMLs compared with those who have plane and trochoid joint type configurations. (c). Participants with double trochoid, saddle and trochlear joint type configurations have higher prevalence of osteophyte compared with those who have plane and trochoid joint type configurations.
