Objectives Create a functional pocket style portfolio to store & preserve artwork & art related paperwork Use symbolic representation, give new meaning to everyday objects, by using illustrations of objects to represent letters of the artist name that symbolize their interests, skills, hobbies, etc. Self reflect on portfolio project & write an artist’s statement

Vocabulary: ILLUSTRATION: a visualization or a depiction of a subject made by an artist remembered or imagined, using a graphical representation. Can be a drawing, sketch, painting, photograph, or other kind of image SYBOLIC REPRESENTATION: when an artist uses a symbol or object visually to represent something else (seen or unseen)

Why do artists use portfolios?
What is a portfolio? A meaningful collection of an artist’s work that highlights their skills & progress Why do artists use portfolios? To store & preserve artworks

How will you be using your portfolio?
To store & preserve your: Art Projects (KEEP ALL OF YOUR ART PROJECTS… YOU WILL NEED THEM) Sketches Notes Handouts Anything else art related you work on in this class Where will you store your portfolio? In the grey drawers at the front of the room with YOUR CLASS LABEL

Directions: Creating a functional pocket style portfolio
Fold large heavyweight paper in half (hamburger style) like a folder Cut two strips of duct tape long enough to cover the short sides of the paper Place 1/2 the width of the duct tape along the short edge of the paper Fold the other 1/2 of the duct tape (backwards) to secure both pieces of paper Cut the excess duct tape that is longer than the portfolio Make a 3”x5” block at the bottom right hand corner of the portfolio & clearly write: First & last name & class pd. (in sharpie)

Directions: Requirements on the portfolio
Name (first & last) & class period in box in bottom right corner First name in illustrations clearly representing letters Letters should represent you (interests, hobbies, skills, etc.) Objects are given new meaning as letters Letters should be recognizable at first glance Uses the elements of art in a neat & thought out manner

Brainstorming Make a list of at least 7 things that interest you
Sports, Fashion, Music, Etc. For each of the things that interest you think about different objects you associate with it Bat, Makeup Compact, Music Note Think about how you may be able to transform that object into a letter of your name Ex: bat + ball = i

Narrowing it down Once you’ve decided on some things you like & might be able to transform into a letter of your name make a sketch of each letter / object in your sketchbook (must get approval to move on) Begin drawing your objects on your portfolio Pencil first Then colored pencil
