Tactics and Principles Of Play
Paul Calum Michael Aaron

Strategies A strategy is a plan that you or your team have organised prior to a game/ performance in order to try and achieve success. They are often called game plans strategies can be adapted during play or at official stoppages.

Tactics A tactic is a specific way of carrying out a particular strategy what to consider: - Your strengths - Your weaknesses - Opponents strengths - opponents weaknesses - time left in game - the score in the game

Tactics & Strategies In cycling a rider may slip-stream. That means using another rider as a windbreak. This means that they stick close behind the one in front and have to peddle less hard.

Tactics & Strategies In badminton a player may try to make their opponent move around the court to try to create space for a winning shot. They might move them to the back of the court and then drop a shot to the front.

Principles of play In many activities where you are applying tactics and strategies you need to consider various principles. fundamental principles: - use and create space in attack. - restrict and deny space in defence.

Width in attack Attacking using wide areas to try and stretch the oppositions defence which will create space in the middle. Width is how you position your players from one side of the pitch to another.

Depth in attack having players behind you and in front of you to create passing opportunities/ options. depth is how you position your players from the top to the bottom of the pitch.

Depth in defence having more than one line of defence in the event of a player being beaten by the opposition. Example – Back 3 players in rugby dropping back in defence.

Delay in defence slowing down an attack to give your players time to get back and defend. Put pressure on attack without committing yourself to a tackle. Examples - hockey defender slowing attacker down so team can get back to defend rugby – full back or winger slowing down runner so the rest of the team can scramble back in defence.
