5+ analysis – Going beyond the basics
The Basics of Reading Analysis: A guide to PEAL with sentence stems to use if required POINT (1) What is my simple answer to the question? E.g. The writer uses…(re-word the question to use as a sentence starter) EVIDENCE (2) What quote will help me to show this is what I think? E.g. An example which shows this is “…”. (Use a short, precise piece of the original text which supports your point). 5+ analysis – Going beyond the basics ANALYSE (3) How can I explain this is what I mean? E.g. By using this it makes me think… (this is your ideas about the quote and how it helps answer the question). (4) What else is suggested by this? E.g. Furthermore, it could be suggested… (5) Is there a particular word that I can closely examine to show how it answers the question? E.g. Using “…” implies that… (6) Is there anything else I can say about the quote to show what I mean? Or What might other people suggest? E.g. Another idea might be… Or, Some people might also think… (7) Can I explore the connotations of a particular word? E.g. Connotations of “…” convey the following ideas:… (8) Can I link what I have said to my own opinion? Or, Can I explain the effect on the reader? E.g. In my opinion this… Or, This could affect the reader by… Link (9) Have I used subject terminology when writing about the quote?
