2 How voting can change law
Most laws are usually made by elected officials, but in some situations voters can change laws directly through casting a ballot. Two ways: Initiative Referendum

3 Image: Definition: A procedure that enables a specified number of voters to propose a law by petition. Added Info: There usually is a minimum number of voters that they need in order for it to be considered by lawmakers. Initiative Examples: Sick Days in Milwaukee Proposition 19 in California

4 Image: Definition: A legislative act that is referred to voters for final approval or rejection. Added Info: This is the closest that the United States gets to direct democracy . Referendum Examples: Gay Marriage in Wisconsin

5 Who Can Vote You must be a citizen by birth or naturalization
At least 18 years old A resident of the community in which you registered In Wisconsin you can register at the polling place on the day of the election. Current voter i.d. law has been suspended in Wisconsin. What do you think?

6 Those Who Cannot Vote Convicted felons, even if they have served their time in prison. People who live in U.S. territories (Guam, Puerto Rico) They have symbolic votes and send a non- voting representative to Congress.
