Wilson’s 14 POINTS President Wilson’s plan to ensure national security and world peace January 8, 1918 First four points End secret treaties, freedom of the seas, free trade, reduced national armies and navies Fifth point Colonial claims with fairness to colonial people Sixth through thirteenth points Self determination Allowed people to decide for themselves under what government they wished to live. Points were specific suggestions for changing borders and creating new nations Fourteenth point Proposed a “general association of nations”

TREATY OF VERSAILLES Paris Peace Conference
Britain and France disagreed with Wilson’s peace proposal. Both nations wanted to strip Germany of war making power. Why would France want to remove Germany’s war making power? Treaty of Versailles Signed by Germany and Allied Powers on June 28, 1919 Adopted Wilson’s 14th point with the creation of League of Nations Punished Germany by restricting military operations, loss of valuable land, take full responsibility of war, and had to pay reparations to Allies.

Austria-Hungary--->Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia Ottoman Empire lost all land except modern day Turkey

Lingering effects War guilt clause left Germans feeling bitter and angry Japan and Italy entered war in hopes of gaining more territory Germany was vulnerable and weak German economy took a massive hit Bitterness of treaty would eventually bring the world to another catastrophic war

How did your country feel about the Treaty of Versailles? Was it fair? Unfair? You must come up with 5 points each (think of social, economic, and political points) Come together as a group and select 8 points (2 per person) that seem reasonable. Create your own peace treaty ***REMEMBER: You are trying to reach peace and avoid another second world war. Come to a consensus!
