Center to extremity Simple to complex

3 Patterns of Development
Head to foot: baby’s head takes lead development, sit, crawl, walk Center to extremity: starts at trunk and move outwards. Wave arms, grab object with hands, pick up with thumb and finger Simple to complex: simple tasks first, builds on earlier mastered skills

4 Rooting Reflex Automatic response, when touched on lips or cheek, of turning toward touch and beginning to suck. Helps baby find food Stops at about 4 months of age

5 Grasp Reflex hand closes over anything that comes in contact with palm
VERY strong Weakens at 3 months of age Disappears by 1 year

6 Startle Reflex Response to loud noise or touch to stomach
Legs and arms extended then pull back Disappears at 5 months old

7 Motor Skills Milestones for Infants
Task: Create a timeline, chart, etc. that displays infants physical development. Use all of the information you have gathered so far in class (notes and discussion) and use the reference pages below in our development books. Requirements: -Must represent the month-by-month physical development of an infant -Must include both information and at least 5 visuals/illustrations total -Must be need organized, neat, easy to read Reference pages- 258 in red “The Developing Child” book 108 and 117 in green “Lifespan Development” book
