Today’s Entrance Slip Writing Prompts:
Please write a response to each of the following items onto the slip you received when you entered the room.
1. What was the highlight of your summer?
2. What do you think the purpose of an entrance and/or exit slip is?

2. What is an entrance / exit slip?
Quick writing strategy
Completed prior to, at the beginning of, and/or at the end of a lesson
Students respond to a writing prompt and submit their response to the teacher
These responses are typically NOT graded

3. Why are they important?
Entrance (Admit) & Exit Slips do the following:
Establish the climate for the day’s activity
Activate and/or reinforce prior knowledge
Provide FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT that is easy to incorporate daily
Allows for student to reflect on, summarize, evaluate, synthesize, etc (all higher order thinking skills we strive for)

4. Why are they important (cont.)?
Entrance (Admit) & Exit Slips do the following:
Provide a routine opening/closing structure to a lesson
Provide an opportunity for constructive feedback between students and/or between student and teacher
Writing prompts can be used to help establish a positive classroom environment (look at today’s 1st ?)

Of the three main causes of the Civil War, which do you think is most important and why?
After reading the scoring guide for speeches, what elements will you need to work on the most to perform well?
Pick one problem on page 5 and write down in words the steps you’d take to solve it.
Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the metric versus English system of measurement

7. Effective Uses of Admit Slips
Use as a daily homework assignment and require slip to enter room next day.
Collect, read several, and discuss.
Hand out randomly and have students read response anonymously.
take volunteers to read slip aloud
Have students pass their slips onto somebody else, who writes a comment about the response, and passes to another student to repeat the process.

8. Effective Uses of Exit Slips
MUST make time (1-5 minutes) at end of class period.
Use simple, open-ended prompts (could offer options)
Use as a diagnostic tool to help evaluate student understanding and attitudes of content & identify misconceptions
Use as a ticket out the door (usually results in 100% completion rate)
