2. Basic Information It was founded in 1955 by the Council of Ministers.
The area is ha and the length of hiking trails is over 270km.
This is one of 23 national parks in the country.
Its counterpart on Slovak side is TANAP.
It is located in the Malopolska district, and in the highest mountain range in Poland.
About 70% of the area is taken up[by forest and thickets of mountain pine; the rest is mostly water, rocks and alpine grasslands

3. The history of the park
In 1868 the Galician parliament established the law ‘in relation to the ban on catching, killing and selling alpine animals, proper Tatra marmot and wild goats’. Then in 1873 the Tatra Society was created, which extended the protection on certain plants, such as alpine edelweiss, yew and pine;
With ordinance of the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform of 26 June 1939 a special organizational unit of the State Forests "Nature Park in the Tatra Mountains, was created in order to "maintain the Tatra flora and fauna and protection of all other forms of wildlife for scientific, aesthetic, historical,commemorative”;
First ideas about the creation of a reserve in this area emerged in the 80s in nineteenth century, following the example of the American Yellowstone park.

4. Process of Creation
The Polish Tatras had to wait for the creation of a national park six years longer than the Slovak Tatras. The park protection covered the entire mountain area and the buffer zone in Podhale. At the time of the creation of the park Tatra Mountains were devastatedthe number of wild mammals was low, and the stand was in a terrible state. Before and during World War II more than half of the Tatra Mountains were a property of the Uznański family, however after the Second World War, while applying for the creation of a national park in the mountains, their property was nationalized.

6. Calendarium

Tatra National Park was created with an addition of the Community Forest Eligible Eight Rural (Chochołowska valley and hoppers).
1993 – the Park enters the list of UNESCO biosphere reserves

7. Tatra National Park includes all of the Polish Tatras, as well as small parts of Bukowiński foothills and UnderTatrian ditch.
The highest point in Poland – Rysy (2499m) is located in the reserve.
Because of big height differences between the hills, climate variability and unusual composition of species in flora and fauna, the Tatras are considered mountain terrain.
Slovak Tatra area is about 5 times bigger than the Polish area;
River catchments from springs in the Slovak part of mountains are mostly in the Black Sea, and like all of the rivers from the Polish side – in the Baltic Sea
