1 Indiana’s Climate & Wildlife
Social Studies Indiana’s Climate & Wildlife

2 Climate and Weather Weather happens on a daily basis or over a short period of time. Climate is the observation and analyzing of weather conditions over a long period of time. Indiana has a temperate climate because it doesn’t get very hot or very cold.

3 Climate

4 Tornadoes!

5 Precipitation

6 Droughts

7 Quick Write Cause and Effect What causes Indiana to have four seasons?

8 Bill Nye!

9 Differences Between Seasons

10 Differences Between Seasons
Temperature Amount of daylight Wildlife activity Activities

11 Globe Vocabulary Northern Hemisphere – The portion of the earth above the equator Southern Hemisphere – The portion of the earth below the equator Equator – The center region around the middle of the earth that comes into the most direct contact of the sun’s rays

12 Globe Vocabulary Axis – The central point around which the earth rotates Revolve – A larger motion around the sun

13 What do you think Antarctica’s climate is like?
Multicultural Group Discussion What do you think seasons are like in other parts of the world, like Australia’s? What would be different between Indiana’s seasons and Australia's seasons? Explain why they would be different. What do you think Antarctica’s climate is like? How do you think Antarctica’s seasons would be different from Indiana’s seasons.

14 Multicultural Australia Antarctica Summer: October – February
Summer: December – February Fall: March – May Winter: June – August Spring: September – November Antarctica Summer: October – February Sun never sets Winter: March – September Sun never rises

15 Seasons

16 Reflect! Look back at your quick write.
How does your prediction or hypothesis compare to what you know to be true now? What is one thing you learned today? Write it down! Share It!

17 Hydrosphere

18 “What I love most about rivers is: You can't step in the same river twice. The water's always changing, always flowing.” Disney’s Pocahontas

19 Vocabulary Water cycle – Water’s movement in the hydrosphere
Hydrosphere – The system of water below, on, and above Earth’s surface.

20

21 Vocabulary Evaporation – The process of the sun’s heat changing water from liquid to water vapor Condensation – The process of cool temperature turning water from water vapor to liquid Clouds are formed when water vapor cools

22 Water Cycle

23 Lakes Like a pool, lakes take a long time to heat up and a long time to cool down. Lake Michigan absorbs and releases heat that affects Indiana’s climate.

24 Indiana’s Precipitation

25 Review – Main Idea & Supporting Details
Several factors affect Indiana’s weather and climate. - What details from the lesson support this main idea?
