There are four main reasons why you should use a comma.
to separate items in a list of 3 or more.
to combine 2 independent clauses with a FANBOYS conjunction
to separate an introductory word or phrase
to separate a dependent clause (or parenthetical phrase) from the rest of the sentence

Commas do a lot of things.
But remember, there are something things that they just can’t do.
Commas CANNOT combine two independent clauses together: that’s a job for FANBOYS and semicolons.

The Oxford Comma is the name given to the comma in a list before the word “and”
Example: I like ice cream, apples, and long walks on the beach.
The last comma before “and” is the OXFORD comma.
Writers argue that the extra comma helps to add clarity to the writing.
Others, including journalists, say that it is unnecessary and that your point should be clear without it.

Brackets [ ] are only used when you need to add clarifying details to a quotation.
