His executioners then laid hold of him, and an instant after, his head was separated from his body; this was about a quarter past ten o'clock.

Death of Louis XIV After the death of Louis XIV, his great grandson, took the throne at Age 5, Louis XV in 1715. He was initially known Louis the beloved after helping defeat France’s enemy to the east , Austria, and fighting in battle himself Towards the end of his life, many citizens grew to hate Louis due to France’s continual spending on military conflict (7 years war)

Rise of Louis XVI (16th) Louis XVI inherited the throne in 1774, at age 20 with serious financial problems. He signed the Edict of Versailles which allowed the freedom of religion Internationally, he continued spending on military (American Revolution) by taking out loans that the French could not repay without raising taxes

Estates General King Louis XVI wanted to reform the tax system to make it more equal. Estates General soon met, similar to parliament, consisted of representatives from all 3 estates Each estates had 1 vote, The 1st and 2nd estates could easily outvote the 3rd estate and voted against these tax reforms

National Assesmbly 3rd estate thought this was unfair  wanted to reform government so that votes were based on each representative, not on each estate Stormed out of the Estates General Met at royal indoor tennis court & swore the “Tennis Court Oath” and Drafted the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen”

March on Versailles Despite these changes, King Louis XVI sill refused to accept the Declaration of Rights and recognize the National Assembly A large protest soon started, led by starving women and armed peasants demanding changes from Louis XVI, forces Louis XVI to flee to Paris

The New constitutions 1791 Created a new constitution in which the monarchy’ s power was limited, however this led to more unrest in violence Created a new government a republic Wrote a democratic constitution Passed universal male suffrage = every man could vote New calendar with “Year 1” in 1792 = marking a new start for France
