4
Admiral Sir John Jellicoe
Commander of the British Grand Fleet Cautious and restrained type of leadership Was criticized for his role in the battle; people wanted him to be very aggressive in his military techniques ("Who Were The Key Personalities In The Battle Of Jutland?" ) 1st Earl Jellicoe. Digital image. N.p., n.d. Web.
5
Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty
Rear Admiral of the British Royal Navy Commander of the Battlecruiser Fleet Had a difficult relationship with Jellicoe due to differences in military strategies ("Who Were The Key Personalities In The Battle Of Jutland?" ) 1st Earl Beatty. N.d. N.p.
6
Admiral Reinhard Scheer
Commander of the German High Seas Fleet Designed a plan to divide the British Navy into smaller groups so they could more easily defeat them, as the British outnumbered the Germans Worked closely with Vice Admiral Franz von Hipper ("Who Were The Key Personalities In The Battle Of Jutland?" )
7
Vice Admiral Franz Von Hipper
Commander of German scouting forces His ships managed to defeat two British Battlecruisers Generally seen as a successful leader ("Who Were The Key Personalities In The Battle Of Jutland?" ) Franz Von Hipper. N.d. Web.

Strategy British Strategy: German Strategy:
Crack the German naval codes and figure out their plans and then send Britain’s entire Grand Fleet at the German fleet to defeat them (which succeeded) German Strategy: Send five scouting battlecruisers to lure the British ships out. After being lured out the rest of the German fleet would come out and destroy the British fleet before backup could arrive (which ultimately failed)
9
Who Won Both sides claimed victory but ultimately Britain won
Britain lost 6,000 soldiers and 14 ships compared to Germany’s 2,500 soldier and 11 ship loss Germany failed to accomplish their objectives whereas Britain maintained control of the North Sea (Battle of Jutland Timeline) (Buchan)
10
Why the British Won Beatty and his battleships changed course to get between the enemy and his base (Buchan, 7) Beatty had one squadron of the largest battleships compared to Jellicoe’s battlecruisers (Buchan, 5) Jellicoe decided to avoid night action, knowing the Germans are more experienced and better equipped (Timeline) The British were able to sail to their bases to refuel/replenish and were ready for further action that evening (Buchan, 36) (Buchan)
11
Impacts on the War and Europe
Britain retained control of the North Sea (Watts) While Britain overall took more loses than Germany, such a large portion of Germany’s fleet was destroyed that they were never able to fully recover, like Britain did. (Hewitt) Britain’s confirmed power over the North sea would allow it to later institute a blockade, which contributed to Germany’s defeat. (Hewitt) (Buchan)
