2 The Compromise of 1850 It was needed to settle disputes between free and slave states in regards to territory acquired by U.S. Texas still has major debt issues Texas tried to raise the money by selling some of its land but their were few buyers

3 How Texas Gets It’s Shape
Texas and the U.S. Government make a deal This deal gives Texas it’s current shape It is called the Compromise of 1850

4 The Compromise of 1850 Texas gives up claim to 67 million acres of land in (THE North) present day Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma In return, U.S. government gives money to Texas to pay off debt

5 Public Lands Texas still had a lot of land after giving up the claims
It gave much of the land to settlers for farming Settlers had to live on and improve the land Texas also set aside land for public schools, colleges and universities Additional land was set aside for harbors, roads, and railroads

California enters The United States as a Free State Fugitive Slave Law Northerners have to help return runaway slaves to the South Washington DC has to stop Slave Trade Popular Sovereignty for the New Mexico and Utah Territories They get to vote if they want to remain free or slave states Texas New Mexico Boundary Act Texas gives (?) away land Texas paid 10 million Dollars Texas Western Boundary is settled
