To sail around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America it would take two months. Theodore Roosevelt wanted a faster way to get ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for both trading and military purposes.

The trip could be shortened from months to days by building a canal through the Isthmus of Panama.

When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, Roosevelt called it “the greatest engineering feat of the ages”. Now a ship can move from one end of the canal to the other in 9 hours.
