1 Panama Canal

2 To sail around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America it would take two months. Theodore Roosevelt wanted a faster way to get ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for both trading and military purposes.

3 The trip could be shortened from months to days by building a canal through the Isthmus of Panama.

4 To have the canal working properly a system of locks was put in place
To have the canal working properly a system of locks was put in place. This allowed water levels to be raised and lowered, so ships can pass through the canal.

11 When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, Roosevelt called it “the greatest engineering feat of the ages”. Now a ship can move from one end of the canal to the other in 9 hours.

12 19 Amendment – This gave women the right to vote.
