2. To sail around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America it would take two months. Theodore Roosevelt wanted a faster way to get ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for both trading and military purposes.

11. When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, Roosevelt called it “the greatest engineering feat of the ages”. Now a ship can move from one end of the canal to the other in 9 hours.
