1. Scenario 1 Scenario 2 Bella Paul Bella used to smoke only at
parties, but more recently she
has started smoking almost every
weekend. Her habit has started to
cost her more which means she
isn’t able to save as much money
towards getting an iPhone. She
also has to be secretive with her
parents, hiding her bag containing
her cigarettes, and covering up
any smell with perfume before
she comes home. She knows
they would be furious if they
found out she smoked. Bella is also hanging out with some new friends who smoke, and her old friends are worried about her and not sure what to do.
Paul, Brett, Hannah and Sally have gone over to
John’s house and are in the back room playing
computer games. There are drinks left over from
John’s sister’s 18th party the night before and
John suggests they mix some to make cocktails
and try them out. He tells them it is the perfect
opportunity as everyone else is still asleep. John has a habit of consuming the left over alcohol after his family members have people over.

2. Scenario 5 Jake Scenario 6 Chloe Jake is at his auntie’s 50th birthday
party. All the adults are inside
and he is hanging out with some
older cousins. One of them has
brought a bottle of champagne out
the back and is sharing it around.
Jake has had a taste but now his
cousins are encouraging him to
have more, saying he is completely
safe and that this is the perfect
situation in which to get drunk for
the first time. But Jake doesn’t like
the idea of being out of control. His cousins say that they do it all the time and that he will be fine.
It is the school holidays and Chloe
and Petra are going to the movies
with Petra’s older sister and some
of her older friends. When they
meet outside the cinema, one of
the older girls pulls out a packet
of cigarettes and begins offering
them around the group. Chloe has
never smoked a cigarette and has
no desire to try it. Petra’s sister
takes a cigarette and invites Petra
and Chloe to try one. They say that they smoke all the time and they promise that the younger girls will not get sick.

3. Scenario 4 Hannah Scenario 3 Ran Hannah, Mary and Genny are
sleeping over at Lara’s house to
celebrate her 13th birthday. They
have just finished watching their
second movie and Lara’s parents
have gone off to bed. Lara says
that her parents sometimes buy
her older sister a few alcoholic
drinks for when she attends
parties. She suggests that they
take one of the drinks and share
it, just to see what it is like – there
are six drinks in the cupboard and
no one will notice just one missing.
Hannah is unsure. She knows her
parents would not approve and
it doesn’t seem right. She also
doesn’t know much about the
effects of alcohol because her
parents don’t drink.
Ran and his friends are getting ready
to go to a big outdoor concert that goes from 12am
till 12pm. The boys have packed some energy drinks to
keep them going. One of the boys suggests adding some alcohol in with the energy drink. Ran has heard some bad stories about people who have mixed alcohol with energy drinks and doesn’t want to try it. He also knows there is going to be heavy security at the concert with a ban on taking alcohol in as it is an underage event. Ran remember that he learnt some information at school about what to do in a situation like this.

4. Scenario 8 Fred Scenario 7 Paul
A group of five friends are camping with
their families at a beach campground. Fred
asks them if they all want to try smoking
cigarettes. He has a packet of cigarettes that
he has taken from his uncle’s car which he
suggests they can share. None of them have
smoked before. He says his uncle won’t
notice it has gone. Juan, one of Fred’s friends are not too sure what the right thing is to do in this situation.
Derik, Paul, Lisa and Amy are part of a group of 4 friends who have
been close friends since Grade 2. Now Paul has started hanging out with some older
students at lunchtime. Now he is starting
to use cigarettes when offered.
The others think the idea of him taking up
smoking is crazy and that they are the wrong
people to be hanging out with in high school.
