2. What does it involve
Phase 1 – Learn and explore medias and processes as a group – ‘Organic/Mechanic’
Phase 2 – Project to a teacher-led starting point
Phase 3 – ‘Art and Design Portfolio’, independent controlled project based on a personal theme, looking at a selection of contextual references and other sources of interest.
Phase 4 – ‘Exam Project’, a controlled project based on exam paper brief.

Artworks are personal to the artist and thought provoking for the viewer.

The world around you… always look for ideas and influences, document and record anything and everything.
Images and text in newspapers and magazines, interesting materials and designs… collect and collate
Collect any articles about artists, designers and exhibitions.
Current affairs and happening… what is happening around you? Find out.
Emotions and Identity… what makes you happy, what makes you sad, what make you YOU?

10. What makes a successful GCSE project?
Work is Personal and thoughtful… we are all different. Be original and be unique
Don’t be afraid to take risks… we are rewarded for our experiments
Embrace all areas of Art and Design… drawing, painting, sculpture, ICT, collage, video, photography, animation, graphics, etc.
Evaluate and annotate. Don’t be a perfectionist, you won’t get it right all the time. Try it, write about it, learn from it and move forward.
Those who are influenced by artists and designers (new and old) and the word around them.
Art is one of the most REWARDING subjects but it involves time, effort and commitment!

11. What makes an unsuccessful project?
Those who limit themselves… (media, ideas, themes)
Those who rely upon the internet as a resource.
Those who leave everything till the last minute
Limited references to artworks and things around them
Projects which lack understanding, explanation and meaning
Lack of personality and creativity

13. How does Art and Design differ from other subjects?
You are the boss! YOU DECIDE what your work is about, where you want to go with it and I will help you to get there.
You have an artist and a teacher to work with. I will be here every step of the way. You can come in and work most lunchtimes and sometimes after school to.
“You get out as much as you put in”… Coursework is even more important than the exam. In Art hard work pays off… we are not looking for perfection, we are looking for creativity and with the right attitude anyone can enjoy and achieve in Art and Design!
