Cells Chapter 2
2
What are cells? Cells are the smallest unit of living things that can carry out the basic processes of life. Unicellular (one-celled) an organism made out of one cell that carries out all its life processes. Multicellular (many-celled) an organism that is made of more than one cell. Each cell carries out its own functions but they also work together.

ANIMAL CELLS
4
Parts of the Animal Cell:
Cell Membrane A layer around the outside of the cell Cytoplasm Gel-like liquid that fills the region between the nucleus and cell membrane Nucleus The cell’s control center Mitochondria Break down food and supply energy for the cell Vacuoles Store water, food, and wastes
6
PLANT CELLS
7
Parts of the Plant Cell:
Cell Wall An additional outer covering around the outside of the cell Vacuole Plant cells usually have one large central vacuole to store extra water and provide support Chloroplasts Plants make their own food in these structures where the energy from sunlight is used to produce food They are green because of chlorophyll which is able to use the energy from sunlight The cell wall provide extra support and the stiff structure of plants. Vacuoles keep plants from drying out.
9
How Are Cells Organized?
Cell- specialize Tissue- similar cells working together Organ- heart, lung, skin, etc. Organ system- circulatory, heart, vessels, blood, etc.
