2
What is Ground Tissue? Ground Tissue is simple non-meristematic tissue (non-dividing tissue) made up 3 cell types: paranenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma.
3
What’s special about Ground Tissue?
Ground tissue is special because it is needed for food intake. It’s also special because it provides the leaves of a plant with mesophyll and without the plant wouldn’t be able to repair any of it’s wounds.

3 Cell Types Parenchyma, the most abundant ground tissue, consists of thin-walled, metabolically active cells that carry out a variety of functions in the plant, including photosynthesis and storage . Collenchyma tissue is composed of narrow, elongated cells with thick primary walls. Collenchyma cells provide structural support to the growing plant body. Sclerenchyma consists of two types of cells, sclereids and fibers Both have thick secondary walls and are frequently dead at maturity. Sclereids occur in a variety of shapes, ranging from roughly spherical to branched, and are widely distributed throughout the plant.

What does it do? Ground tissue is responsible for storing carbohydrates , produced by the plant, it lies between the vascular and dermal tissue. The major cells of the ground tissue have thin walls, many chloroplasts and large vacuoles, and they form the mass leaves, stems and roots. Many different functions are performed by ground tissue including photosynthesis, storage, and support
