Principles of Design

Principles of Design The Principles of design are what we do with the elements of design.  How we apply those principles determines how successful we are in creating the design.

Balance All elements are placed in a way that gives the impression of steadiness. 2 types of balance: 1) Formal Balance- when a line is drawn through the centre of the design it would create two halves that are similar or symmetrical. Formal balance gives a sense of strength and security.

Balance Continued Informal Balance- balance of objects that may look different but have equal weight to the eye. It allows for more flexible placement of elements in the layout.

Repetition or Rhythm Rhythm occurs when a certain element is repeated. It can add movement to a design. It looks like something is happening and leads the reader's eye in a desired direction. Good rhythm helps the reader maintain interest in the design.

Contrast The purpose of contrast in design is to create interest in the product. Interest is typically created by change in size, shape, colour, tone, typeface, and direction.

Unity Unity is the most important principle of design.
Each element needs to be placed on the page in a pleasing relationship with the other elements.

Proportion Proportion refers the size relationship of visual elements to each other and to the whole picture.

Guidelines for a Good Design:
Consider the Audience.   Be Consistent.   Keep it Simple.   Establish a Dominant Element.   Images and Symbols Enhance the Message.   Utilize White Space.
