2 I. The People A. People arrived in SE Asia 2500 years ago.

F. Most people live in fertile river valleys or on the coast 1. Water supply, fertile land, and transportation attract people to these regions.

A. People are increasingly moving toward the cities 1. Reasons: jobs, education, and political conflict

6 B. Many people left mainland SE Asia over the last 40 years due to economic issues, political oppression, and war. 1. Skilled and educated workers left which hurt the countries even more

7 III. History A. By the 1500s, Europeans came to this region for trade, to spread Christianity, and to claim territory. B. British and French were two of the biggest colonizers C. Most countries have attained freedom after wars and struggles post WWII

8 IV. Culture: Education & Health Care
A. Education and literacy are on the rise, but its not available to everyone and still not top notch B. Health care is poor. They lack sanitation and medicine, especially in rural areas. 1. Disease rate is high due to this

9 V. Culture: Religion and Language
A. Buddhism is the primary religion on the region B. Hundreds of languages and dialects are spoken 1. Most come from 2 language families: Sino-Tibetan and Mon-Khmer

10 VI. The Arts A. India and China have had great influence on the art of SE Asia. B. They produce fine crafts: Dishes, Furniture, lacquerware…etc.
