Installing and Configuring Device Drivers
Device Drivers Are Software Utilities That Enable Hardware to Communicate with the Operating System. All Components Utilize Drivers, Disk Drives, Display Adapters, NICs, Keyboards, and So Forth. Each New Version of an Operating System Requires New Drivers. Installed Drivers May Be Updated. Three stages of driver installation: Add device, Locate drivers, and Configure device settings.

Installing Devices and Drivers
Plug and Play (PnP) Automatically Configures Many Drivers. If Windows 7 Has No Driver Available, It Prompts for Disk or Path to Driver. Device Stage Provides Single Location from Which You Can Manage Installed Devices. Wizard Searches for Devices. Default Driver Installation May Be Modified.

Updating Drivers Windows Update Provides Automatic Means of Updating All Device Drivers. Connects Through Windows Update Website. Only Digitally Signed Drivers on the Update Website. The procedure includes creating, initializing, and formatting. Review steps for each.

After this window, user may select optional updates from a list.

Device Manager Device Manager Utility Used for Implementation, Management, and Troubleshooting. Can Be Run in Microsoft Management Console or as Component of Computer Management Snap-In. Review different methods of accessing Device Manager.

Device Manager Properties
Review General, Advanced, Driver, Details, Resources, and Power Management Tabs. See textbook Table 7-2. Device Manager may also be used to uninstall a driver, or disable a driver.

Maintaining Device Drivers
Manufacturers May Release Updated Drivers. Updated Driver May Not Function Properly. Driver Signing Validates Third-Party Files That Have Been Submitted to Microsoft. Drivers on Windows 7 Installation DVD or on Microsoft Update Website Include Microsoft Digital Signature. Demonstrate installing a driver that is digitally-signed, and one that is not. Standard users have different driver installation privileges than Administrative users.

Resolving Driver Conflicts. Device Manager Resources Tab Informs of Any Driver Conflicts. Windows 7 Action Center Is a New Tool Offering Information on Device-Related Problems. System Information Can Locate Driver Problems. Windows 7 Rollback Can Reinstall Previous Driver if Current Driver Causes Problems. Works for All Devices Except Printers. Demonstrate and show tools.

Group Policy Provides a Series of Settings That Govern Windows Update: Walk through accessing Group Policy. Emphasize that this is local, and Domain policy is applied over the network.
