1 Chemical Compounds in Cells
Pg. 25~30

2 Elements The world around us, including our bodies, are composed of elements. Elements are the most basic substances which cannot be broken down. Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen Nitrogen Phosphorous Sulfur

3 Compounds A substance composed of two or more elements.
Most of the compounds in our bodies exist as molecules with definite formulas. Ex) Water Carbon Dioxide

4 Organic vs. Inorganic Organic compounds are molecules produced by living organisms. Carbohydrates Lipids Proteins Nucleic Acids Inorganic compounds are produced independent of life processes. Salt Water Carbon Dioxide

5 Carbohydrates Fuel of Cells
Energy rich organic compound composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Glucose - Sugar – Starch Cell Walls of plants

6 Lipids Energy-rich organic molecule composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Most energy among organic molecules Fats, oils, waxes Used for energy storage, body temperature maintenance, and protecting organs

7 Proteins Large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Proteins are made of smaller molecules called amino acids. There are 20 different amino acids. The structure of the protein depends upon the order of the amino acids. Structural Proteins, Enzymes, hormones

8 Proteins

9 Nucleic Acids Very long organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. DNA – Found in Chromatin of Nucleus Encodes the sequence of amino acids necessary for protein production. RNA - Copied form of DNA

10 Water Constitutes 2/3 of our bodies.
Most water is located in the cytoplasm of our cells. Water facilitates chemical reactions in our cells. Helps maintain body temperature and expel wastes
