Synthesis of Potential Molecular Wire Candidates
Christine R. de Denus, Department of Chemistry, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, NY Research in my group is focused on the preparation of potential molecule wire candidates that contain metals pendant to the backbone as well as within the backbone structure. To date, we have studied complexes that contain ferrocene and ruthenium. We have investigated two different synthetic approaches with varying degrees of success. Both methods yield the desired complex, but we have found that we obtain better yields by method 2. We believe that this is due to the enhanced solubility of the terpyridine salt in solution prior to complexation with the chlorocarbonylferrocene. Currently, we are characterizing these materials via multinuclear NMR, IR, MS, EA and cyclic voltammetry. Method 1 Method 2
