1 Wind Mrs. Paul 6th Science Land and Sea Breezes

2 **from uneven heating of Earth’s surface**
WIND Wind is the movement of air. Wind is named by the direction it comes from. It is caused by: 1.Differences in temperature. 2.Differences in pressure. **from uneven heating of Earth’s surface**

3 DIFFERENCES IN TEMPERATURE
1. Warm air rises. Warming air makes the molecules move faster and spread out. This makes the air less dense  rises

4 Differences in Temperature
2. Cold air sinks. Cooling air makes the molecules move slower and group together. This makes the air more dense  sinks

7 DIFFERENCES IN PRESSURE
1. Rising air creates low pressure. If air is lifted up, that means there is Less air pushing down on Earth. 2. Sinking air creates high pressure. If air is sinking, then air is pushing down on the surface of Earth with a high amount of pressure.

8 The Creation of Wind 1. Differences in temperature cause air to rise and sink all over Earth’s surface. 2. Rising and sinking air creates high and low pressure. 3. The atmosphere does NOT like UNBALANCED PRESSURE SOOOO… IT TRIES TO EQUAL OUT PRESSURE BY MOVING AIR FROM HIGH TO LOW PRESSURE.

9 Winds are created by … 1. Heating the air, air rises (low pressure).
2. Cool air rushes in to replace the warm air (high pressure). 3. As air goes from high pressure to low pressure, winds form. 4. Wind is a horizontal movement of air. 5.There are 2 types of winds: local & global.

10 Sea Breeze vs. Land Breeze

11 SEA BREEZE During the daytime land heats up much faster than water as it receives solar radiation from the sun. Warm air over the land rises. Cool air over the water rushes in. Air moves from sea to land

12 SEA BREEZE… Air moves from the sea during the day.

13 Land BREEZE… During the night land cools down much faster than water.
Warm air over the water rises. Cool air over the land rushes in. Air moves from land to water.

14 Land BREEZE… air moves from the land at night.

15 Mountain Breeze vs. Valley Breeze

16 Mountain Breeze at night, cool air aloft tries to sink, and slides down the slopes to the lower valley floor, forcing warmer air to rise

17 Valley Breeze trigger updrafts in the mountains that draw air up the slopes from the valley floor below
