1 Today’s Agenda… Bellringer: Define population and community and describe your own. Review Symbiosis Turn in Symbiosis Worksheet Notes on Flow of Energy

2 Review… How can we describe a population? What is a limiting factor?
What is carrying capacity?

3 Review… What is a symbiosis? What is mutualism? What is commensalism?
What is parasitism?

4 Review… What is a habitat? What is a niche?
What is your habitat and niche?

5 Flow of Energy Study Pack #11

6 Today’s Goals… I can explain the difference between a food chain and a food web. I can describe how energy flows through ecosystems.

7 Energy Flow Through Ecosystems
Food contains nutrients and energy needed for survival When one organism is food for another organism, some of the energy in the first organism (the food) is transferred to the second organism (the eater)

8 Energy Flow Through Ecosystems
Producers – use energy from the sun to produce food Consumers – take in energy when they feed on producers and other consumers Decomposers – take in energy as they break down the remains of organisms

9 Food Chains Shows how energy flows from one organism to another
Arrow shows the direction of energy flow Page

10 Food Webs Overlapping food chains
Organisms are part of more than one food chain More complete model of how energy flows

11 Energy Pyramid Compares the amount of energy available at each level of the food chain The amount of energy decreases as you go up Which level has the most energy?
