Humanism In the 1300s and 1400s, Europeans created a new way of understanding the world called humanism. Humanists believed people should be involved in their cities, develop their talents, and use knowledge (instead of religious faith) to understand the world. 4

Humanists wrote many books in Latin, which was a well-known language to many Europeans. Humanists spread their ideas through writing, and eventually started writing in modern languages such as Italian, French, and German. 8

Around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. His machine could print books quickly, making books widely available. As books were more available, more people learned to read, and new ideas were spread quickly. 10
