2. When light strikes an object, the light can be:
Absorbed (taken, held in)
Reflected (bounces back)
Transmitted (passes through)

3. Opaque
Definition: a material that REFLECTS or ABSORBS all of the light that strikes it
You CANNOT see through the object
Examples: wood, brick, cotton fabrics

4. Transparent Definition: A material that TRANSMITS light
Light passes through allowing you to see what is on the other side
Examples include: clear glass, water, air

5. Translucent
Definition: A material that SCATTERS light as it passes through
You can tell something is behind the object, but cannot see the details
Examples include: frosted glass, wax paper

6. You see most objects because light is REFLECTED or BOUNCES, off them
You see most objects because light is REFLECTED or BOUNCES, off them. What you see when you look at an object depends on how its surface REFLECTS light

Definition: the bouncing back of a wave as it hits a surface through which it CANNOT pass through

8. REFRACTION can cause you to see something that may not actually be there. When light rays enter a new medium at an angle, the change in speed causes them to BEND, or change DIRECTION

Definition: the bending of waves as they enter a new medium

Definition: is an image of a distant object caused by refraction of light

Definition: forms when sunlight is refracted by tiny water droplets

Definition: is a curved piece of glass or other transparent material that is used to refract light

14. Concave Lens Definition: is thinner in the center than at the edges
Because the light rays never meet, a concave lens can ONLY produce a VIRTUAL IMAGE
