What is Odyssey of the Mind?
A program where teams of students work together to solve original, fun problems. How? By using their creativity. How do they present their solutions? In an 8-minute performance. What should I expect?

Teams compete in Divisions
Division is determined by the oldest team member. Primary: Kindergarten – 2nd Grade Division I: Kindergarten – 5th Grade Division II: 6th – 8th Grade Division III: 9th – 12th Grade Division IV: Collegiate/Military

The Three Components of Odyssey of the Mind
Long-Term Solution worth up to 200 points Style within the presentation of the Long-Term Solution worth up to 50 points. Spontaneous Problem Solution worth up to 100 points ● Verbal – Respond to something, tell a story, etc. ● Hands-on – Build something, manipulate materials, etc. ● Combination verbal & Hands-on – action and responses. ● Assigned on the day of the tournament. ● Top Secret! Long-Term + Style + Spontaneous = Total Score

What are the problems like?
There are a variety of Long Term Problems and there are Spontaneous Problems. Teams take weeks or months solving Long Term problems. Spontaneous problems are given to the teams at the tournament. What’s a Long Term Problem? Long Term Problems have many components and range from emphasizing technology (Problems 1 and 2) to emphasizing the arts (Problems 3 & 5). Problem 4 is always a unique balsa structure that holds weight.

What is Style? Style is the elaboration of the Long-Term Problem solution. Style provides teams with the opportunity to showcase their skills and to incorporate their interests into their solutions. Style can be art, music, dance, humor, engineering, costuming, creative writing, creative use of materials, and on and on.

You can utilize spontaneous problems in any setting.
Odyssey of the Mind has many components that can be utilized to achieve Florida Standards and Common Core objectives. You can utilize spontaneous problems in any setting. Looking for a unique way to incorporate STEAM? Odyssey of the Mind is the way to go!
