Figure 1 (A) Platelets interact with circulating monocytes to aid conversion to tissue macrophages and can drive differentiation of monocytes into both proinflammatory and antiinflammatory monocytes. tumor necrosis factor-α expressing proinflammatory monocytes then influence cerebral microglial reactivity. (B) During situations of liver inflammation, platelets interact with Kupffer cells within the hepatic sinusoids and modulate Kupffer cell production of CCL2 and tumor necrosis factor-α, which may also influence cerebral leukocyte recruitment. (C) Platelets may directly interact with the cerebral endothelium enhancing reactivity and, thus, leukocyte recruitment.
