Figure 1 T-cell responses modified by PD-1/PD-L1 interactions in the liver. When inflammation is minimal, there is limited expression of PD-1 on T cells and PD-L1 on hepatocytes. TCR signaling provokes vigorous cytokine production and T-cell proliferation (left). With increased inflammation, there is enhancement of PD-1/PD-L1 co-inhibitory signaling and impairment of cytokine production and proliferation of responding T cells (center). At maximal levels of inflammation, there is increased signaling through PD-1 following PD-L1 ligation enhancing apoptosis of responding T cells (right).
