Gender Equality/Inequality in Africa

Culture/Traditions According to many traditions, women tend to have the responsibilities of a housewife or as a mother. Therefore, men have the duty of sustaining the family. In many cultures it isn’t rare for a young woman to get married at the age of 18 or younger.

Health in Women Women in Africa tend to die mostly by easily transmitted diseases (like HIV, tuberculosis malaria, etc.), death by childbirth at a young age and deficiencies in their nutrition compared to other women around the world.

Pay Gap The difference of payment between women and men in Africa is known as the pay gap. The South African gender pay gap is estimated, on average, to be between 15%-17%, this difference in payment is mostly thought to happen because of gender inequality.

Education When it comes to education women tend to drop out more than boys. This can be because of the many reasons like not enough money in the family, responsibilities in their homes, or even pressure from their cultures.

Women in Today’s Society
Thanks to the new laws that have been created like on giving a stricter punishment for domestic violence against women has declined.
